Adjusting to Microsoft Office 2007's Menu Ribbon

If you’ve just made the switch from Microsoft Office 2003 to 2007, you might need some time to adjust to the new menu layout.  The  menu bar is now referred to as the menu ribbon and is setup differently from previous versions.  So if you're brand new to 2007:

  • First, rest assured that all previous menu options can be accessed in the updated version, along with some very useful new functions.  For instance, Word 2007 comes with a new citation and bibliography creator that asks for basic bibliographic information (title, author, date, etc.) and will spit it back out in the form of a citation or bibliography in the citation style you select  (APA, ALA, Chicago, though no Bluebook legal citation).  Very handy!
  • Also, forget (most of) what you knew about navigating the old menus. I think Microsoft was shooting for a more intuitive design, so approach the menu as a first time user, not as someone trying to navigate the new ribbon based on the old menu. Many of the features can be found in the same place but looking at it with a set of fresh eyes might alleviate some frustration.

If you're completely new to Office 2007, you can watch this quick screen cast I put together for a very rudimentary introduction to the new menu ribbon.

If you still find yourself missing the old setup, you can give Toolbar Toogle a try.  This program will change the menu ribbon to look like the old 2003 version you're used to, and will allow you to toggle between the two as you learn the new version.
