Video Production Companies Targeting Nonprofits

The Consumerist reported today on the ongoing saga of Vision Media Television, a questionable production company targeting nonprofits with the promise of producing promotional videos that they claim will be aired on local television stations. Vision Media is now suing a blogger who spoke out against the company for $20 million, claiming defamation, trade libel, and tortious interference with a business relationship. (The complaint is available here.)

Just as disturbing as the lawsuit itself is the number of companies that may be engaging in similar practices. The piece lists a whole host of other businesses - some of which have names strikingly similar to well-known production companies - that organizations should watch out for. It's a good reminder of the value of thoroughly researching potential vendors.

Ironically, creating and distributing promotional videos for your organization is easier and more cost-effective than ever. As Eva pointed out a few weeks ago, several programs have posted videos to YouTube. A 501(c)(3) organization can register for a free nonprofit channel that has added branding, fundraising, and technical benefits. Camcorders, microphones, and video editing software can all be obtained at reasonable prices, and you can find good video production tutorials for free over the Web or through your local library.
