We wanted to let you know about a new funding opportunity that may be of interest to legal aid organizations interested in expanding on (or ready to begin) work to incorporate AI-tools, training, or community‐driven innovation into your work .
The OpenAI People-First AI Fund — is a new $50 million fund designed to support U.S. nonprofits doing work with AI literacy, community innovation, and economic opportunity. Some key information about eligibility:
• Organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with annual operating budgets greater than $500,000 and less than $10 million.
• The work proposed must be U.S.-focused, and the organizations must lead or be directly involved (i.e. no regranting; no fiscally sponsored projects; no internal subunits of larger institutions even if budget fits).
• Application deadline: October 8, 2025, 11:00 p.m. PT
Invitation to Office Hour with LSNTAP and LSC on Thursday, September 25, 4-5 pm ET:
To help legal aid organizations think through any potential projects and applications, we are hosting an informal office hour session on Zoom next week where we will:
• Break down the fund’s goals, grant size, deadlines, and eligibility.
• Brainstorm ideas for projects
• Facilitate a community discussion about potential collaborations and project ideas that could benefit the broader legal aid community.
Whether you already use AI tools or are just curious about whether this fund could help you get started, we hope to provide concrete ideas, clarity about the application process, and connections with other organizations doing similar work.
Who should attend? Staff, leadership, and tech or program teams from legal aid / access to justice organizations and any existing partners in AI-based work (such as funders or vendors).
