What is an AI Policy?

An AI policy is a set of rules that helps your staff understand:

  • How they can and cannot use AI tools at work
  • What tools can and should be used
  • What types of data are safe to share with AI tools
  • How to protect client and organizational confidentiality when using AI tools
  • Who must review or approve AI-generated content
  • What ethical standards must be upheld
  • What training staff may be required to complete prior to using AI

Before You Start

Here are a few things to think about before you begin creating your policy:

  1. Who will use AI tools in your organization?
    1. All staff?
    2. Just certain departments?
  2. What kinds of tasks will they use AI for?
    1. Writing drafts?
    2. Summarizing meetings?
    3. Brainstorming ideas?
  3. What types of information are they working with?
    1. Is any of it private or confidential?
  4. What existing policies do you already have?
    1. Think about data privacy, cybersecurity, or legal ethics policies that this new policy needs to align with.[
