LSNTAP Launches Free AI Use Policy Builder for Legal Aid Organizations Nationwide
Interactive tool lets organizations customize AI governance language by section, stance, and length — then generate a complete, ready-to-use policy document in minutes.
Ypsilanti, MI — April 21, 2026 — The Legal Services National Technology Assistance Project (LSNTAP) today launched the AI Use Policy Builder, a free interactive tool that helps legal aid and nonprofit organizations across the U.S. develop customized artificial intelligence use policies without requiring specialized legal or technical expertise. The tool is available now at lsntap.org and requires no login, registration, or software installation.
The Policy Builder guides users through 13 key policy sections — from purpose and scope to data protection, human oversight, disclosure, enforcement, and review processes. For each section, users select a restriction stance (Laissez-Faire, Intermediate, or Restrictive) and a preferred length (Short, Medium, or Robust), preview the corresponding clause language in real time, and then generate a complete, printable policy document with a single click.
The tool addresses a growing need within the legal aid community. As generative AI tools become increasingly common in legal services settings, many organizations have struggled to establish governance frameworks that balance the productivity benefits of AI with the ethical, confidentiality, and professional obligations inherent to legal representation. The Policy Builder's clause library covers the full range of AI governance considerations relevant to nonprofit and legal services contexts, including compliance with professional conduct rules such as the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct.
"Every legal aid organization needs to be thinking seriously about how they use AI — but not every organization has the bandwidth to draft a policy from scratch. The Policy Builder gives teams a structured, expert-informed starting point they can tailor to fit their own culture and risk tolerance." -Shellie Reid, LSNTAP Manager
Once selections are complete, users can copy the assembled policy to their clipboard, download it as a printable document, or use it as a starting point for further customization with legal counsel.
The AI Use Policy Builder is part of LSNTAP's broader initiative to support the legal aid community in navigating the opportunities and challenges presented by artificial intelligence. It joins a growing suite of AI-focused resources on the LSNTAP platform, including the AI & Legal Information Database and the Legal Aid Tech Stack. The tool is free and publicly accessible. Organizations are encouraged to treat the generated policy as an informed starting point and to consult with legal counsel before formal adoption.
