Designing Trauma Informed Ethical Justice Tech

Description: Research shows that reactions to stress, scarcity, and trauma can alter cognitive processes such as memory, attention, planning, and decision making. This impacts how easily people can find information and complete tasks online, so it is critical to consider the impacts of trauma when designing public-facing legal tech tools. This workshop will explain the practical continuum from trauma-awareness, through trauma-sensitive and trauma-informed, to trauma-responsiveness to help participants understand where they and their organizations currently operate and how to progress towards a trauma-responsive approach to legal services. It will introduce the ethical tech framework that Innovation for Justice uses to design trauma-informed tech tools that are accessible, usable, and useful for real people. It will also address the impacts of trauma exposure response and self-care strategies for people working in legal tech design. Participants will leave this session with a better understanding and an actionable tool kit for implementing trauma-informed research, ethical tech design, and self-care approaches in their own work.
Speakers: Sarah Mauet, Cayley Balser
Audience: Beginner, interest or experience in justice focused UX-design
